Opportunity: Database Architect & Developer @ Vanderbilt CHGR--Nashville, TN (US)

BACKGROUND
The Vanderbilt Center for Human Genetics Research (CHGR) is developing a data warehouse and web application to house all data from ongoing research studies. These data include clinical, demographic, genetic, analyses, and sample data from studies of the genetics of complex human diseases. Data collected in these studies will be extensive and will require the development of novel storage structures.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Developing and maintaining conceptual, logical and physical data models.
- Working with business analysts and domain matter experts to understand informational requirements
- Developing data migration strategies
- Developing impact analysis for database changes including software development change estimates
- Developing Ruby on Rails migrations and fixtures for database structures
- Communicating data requirements to the development team and other stakeholders
REQUIREMENTS
- BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- At least 3 years as a Data Architect or Database designer
- Experience with Web Application development.
- Full project life-cycle experience (from requirements gathering to testing).
- An understanding of database design techniques for data warehouse and data mart design.
- Experience in data modeling and data architecture principles.
- Experience in RDBMS technologies Oracle and MySQL.
- Experience using tools such as E/R studio and Aqua data studio.
- Experience working in a UNIX/Linux environment
- An understanding/experience of working within an iterative development environment
- The applicant must be able to work independently and interact well within a team environment.
PREFERENCES
- Bioinformatics experience in the medical or other life sciences industries.
- Experience working in an Agile development process.
- Experience with object oriented web application development languages such as Ruby on Rails and PHP
- Experience with database refactoring and agile database techniques

COMPENSATION
