Opportunity: Web Developer @ the Marine Biological Laboratory--Woods Hole, MA (US)

The MBLWHOI Library at the Marine Biological Laboratory seeks applications for highly motivated informatics specialists to join a growing team of developers and informaticians focusing on the biology of aging. Join a community of researchers that are internationally recognized as defining the current trends and practices in marine information sciences and biological informatics.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with the current development team to create bleeding edge web applications for the display and analysis of biological information related to aging.
- Develop solutions for loading, manipulating and searching large amounts of data (6M+ records)
- Use semantic technologies, including reasoning, planning, description logics, semantic web services, logistics, etc
- Work in an agile environment where core practices include test-driven development, continuous integration, small release cycles, and collective code ownership
- Collaborate with other cutting-edge informatics initiatives, such as the Biodiversity Heritage Library and the Encyclopedia of Life.
- Report to the Lead Web Developer for the Ellison Medical Foundation (EMF) funded initiative at the Marine Biological Laboratory to study the biology of aging across the spectrum of life.
REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience:
Required:
- Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science or relevant field
- Candidates with prior Ruby experience will be given extra consideration, but all candidates with a strong grasp of programming principles, particularly experience with similar languages (Perl, Python, Lisp, Scheme, Erlang, etc.), will be viewed favorably
- Enthusiasm and ability for solving difficult, algorithmically novel problems
- Demonstrable experience with database management systems (such as MySQL or PostgreSQL)
Preferred:
- Experience developing in a Mac OS X or Linux environment
- Experience in open source technologies is required and individuals who have participated in or contributed to the development of open source projects will be given higher consideration
- Knowledge of Java
- Training or experience in biological science (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics)
