    BACKGROUND

    About Us: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home of three Nobel laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to the development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation, the Centerís four scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science. The Hutchinson Center, in collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Childrenís Hospital and Regional Medical Center, is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest.

    About the Department: Research Computing Support provides for the specialized computing hardware, software, and storage needs of researchers and other shared resources. Research Computing Support staff members provide the computational infrastructure that supports the data produced by the Center's most prolific technology.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Scope: The incumbent reports to the Vice President, Shared Resources and works independently in managing resource operations. Special knowledge and expertise are used in performing the technical aspects of the job, while strong interpersonal and communication skills are used in interacting with users and promoting the resource.

    Summary: The Director of Research Computing Support (RCS) Shared Resource will be responsible for identifying computational and data management infrastructure needs, and developing and implementing cost-effective solutions. The individual will manage technical staff responsible for providing quality service to researchers all across the Center and provide support for planning, infrastructure and applications. The individual will interact closely with FHCRC researchers and core facility staff to address unmet needs, and will build and manage a computational infrastructure to support the ongoing research employing data-intensive technologies (e.g., genomics, proteomics, imaging). Success will be measured by the ability of RCS to create a world-class computational environment to promote and advance data-intensive research at the Center.

    Major Responsibilities:
    • Develop and manage operations of the Research Computing Support Shared Resource.
    • Consult with researchers on computational needs and approaches and data management issues, to meet current needs and plan for future needs.
    • Develop standard operating procedures for high-performance computing.
    • Develop, implement, and manage LIMS and data-processing pipelines to support research needs.
    • Allocate and manage computing resources to optimize performance.
    • Recruit, retain, manage and mentor quality technical support staff. Set goals and conduct performance planning with staff, establishing clearly defined job duties, responsibilities and functions.
    • Provide advice regarding technology and staffing requirements for grant proposals. Assist in grant writing and participate in other ways to secure funding to support RCS operations
    • Establish and maintain positive relationships with commercial vendors and colleagues at peer institutions.
    • Works closely with Information Technology managers across the Center to optimize IT planning and use of IT resources. Active participation in IT oversight committees.
    • Perform additional responsibilities as needed.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A PhD in a Life Science discipline, Computer Science or Engineering. Equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
    • Project management experience required, including the ability to scope, plan and prioritize multiple projects.
    • Five years of progressive management experience and the ability to lead a diverse workforce.
    • Expert knowledge of and at least 5 years experience directing a department administering PC, Sun Unix, Linux systems and 5 years experience with clusters.
    • Extensive knowledge in the design, implementation and maintenance of a multi-platform integrated Enterprise and Research/Academic computing environment and a quality customer service support model supporting varied end user platforms.
    • Functional experience in departmental management, systems implementation, project management and customer relations, preferably in a higher education or research environment.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • A track record of building successful relationships with researchers in the biological sciences.
