Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICIST, Biofuels @ National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)--Golden, CO (US)
Submitted by Christopher Chang; posted on Wednesday, October 07, 2009
    RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will perform independent and team research on genome-scale biochemical transformations, including network inference from transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data, and in-depth mining of literature and databases. This information will be assembled into a flux balance model for simulations under a variety of objective functions (e.g., biomass formation) and constraints, in order (a) to provide an evolving context for training, validation, and future experimental data sets, and (b) to generate hypotheses regarding productive metabolic engineering targets for the identified biofuel-relevant products. The candidate will maintain active collaborations with experimental researchers to incorporate microarray, proteomics, and metabolomics data as well as with applied mathematicians and computer scientists. Research progress will be reported through written reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at in-house seminars and international meetings. Assistance with grant proposal development involving related research is expected.

    REQUIREMENTS:
A recent Ph.D. degree (less than 3 years) in computational biology, bioinformatics, or allied fields. Experience with metabolic pathway reconstruction, preferably within the Biocyc/Pathway Tools framework; bioinformatics and biological data mining relevant to pathway reconstruction; FBA model encoding and constrained FBA; and, shell environments and scripting for bioinformatics. Should be familiar with the chemistry of biochemical transformations and basic biological regulation.

    PREFERENCES:
Familiarity with the biofuels and renewable energy technology field, multi-user cluster environments (particularly Linux-based), and computing technologies (programming or scripting languages, databases) underlying common bioinformatics tools.

    TERMS:
NREL's Computational Sciences Center has an immediate opening for a full-time (40 hours per week) Postdoctoral Researcher to identify known and putative central carbon metabolic pathways relevant to biofuel production, and to assemble this information into a working flux-balance model for validation against and integration of experimental data. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal for up to two years.

    LOCALE:
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

    SALARY & BENEFITS:
NREL offers excellent benefits and competitive compensation. Please see [link] for more details.

    HOW TO APPLY:
    Submit materials through [link].

    REFERENCE:
Position opening corresponds to requisition number 831BR.

    DEADLINE: Dec. 1, 2009
