Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICIAN @ European Bioinformatics Institute--Hinxton/Cambridge, UK

BACKGROUND:
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) develops and maintains many of the world’s key bioinformatics database and service resources. ArrayExpress acquires curates, integrates and makes available to the community functional genomics data from a variety of technologies including microarrays, in-situ and new generation sequencing technologies from individuals and institutions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
We are seeking to recruit a bioinformatician to participate in the development of tools to manage data and annotation activities in the ArrayExpress infrastructure particularly for next generation sequencing data.
The bioinformatician will also participate in the development of standard formats, semantic support and data processing applications for data within the ArrayExpress infrastructure, as well as the curation and management of data in XML and tab-delimited formats.
The bioinformatician will contribute towards the development and implementation of standard meta analysis processes, and production of standard datasets based on ArrayExpress content for QC and data integration purposes.
The bioinformatician will be required to represent the ArrayExpress production team at meetings and conferences of both a biological and technical nature held with collaborators and by external organisations. S/he will assist in the training of ArrayExpress resources at EBI organised road show events mainly in Europe.
REQUIREMENTS:
The ideal candidate should have a first degree in biomedical science, bioinformatics or a related discipline. S/he should have at least 1 year of Perl (or Java) programming and data manipulation experience, preferably in a bioinformatics environment, ideally to the level of object-oriented and database programming, use of modules etc. Familiarity with XML, HTML, SQL and/or Ruby-on-Rails would be an advantage. Practical experience with microarray data manipulation and/or use of UHTS technologies in a gene expression context and analysis preferably using Bioconductor is preferred.
Experience of working within a team is essential as the post holder will work with a diverse team of 8 data curators, ontologists and Perl and Java programmers who produce the content for the ArrayExpress database and also manage data, or develop resources for several additional EU grants. Experience of developing and delivering training courses would be useful.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

The bioinformatician should enjoy working in a stimulating and international culture.
TERMS:
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
Please note that special visa requirements apply to persons from countries outside the EU coming to work at EMBL-EBI in the UK. This period of work will not count as qualifying time in the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme.
