    Opportunity: Software Engineer @ European Bioinformatics Institute--Hinxton/Cambridge, UK

    BACKGROUND:
    The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) provides cutting edge research, service and training in the field of bioinformatics and is home to world class bioinformatics resources.

    The Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) provides a central resource on protein information with a comprehensive set of services including the computational analysis of protein data. UniProt is produced by the UniProt Consortium - a collaboration between the EBI, the Protein Information Resource (PIR) and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB).

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    We are currently looking to recruit a versatile and experienced software engineer with proficiency in Oracle SQL as well as having a good knowledge of Java programming to be responsible for database development and data production pipelines maintenance in Uniprot. The software engineer will work with other EBI groups (EMBL-Bank, Ensembl, etc.) to ptovide data pipelines for genomes and their corresponding set of expressed proteins.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    The software engineer should hold a degree in a relevant field and be proficient in SQL (Oracle) and/or PL/SQL with at least 2 years of working experience. A good knowledge in Java programming and UNIX scripting is essential for this job. Experience with relational database design will be highly beneficial.

    PREFERENCES:
    The post holder should be able to work well both independently and within a team of software developers and biologists. The position requires the ability to work under time pressure and to communicate effectively with team members in the project. Therefore good communication and interpersonal skills, as well as English language are needed.

    TERMS:
    An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.

    Please note that special visa requirements apply to persons from countries outside the EU coming to work at EMBL-EBI in the UK. This period of work will not count as qualifying time in the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme.

    LOCALE:
    The EBI is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton near Cambridge in the UK.
