Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Programmer, NexGen Applications @ Baylor College of Medicine HGSC--Houston, TX (US)
Submitted by Roxanne Reyna; posted on Thursday, October 22, 2009
    BACKGROUND:
The Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor HGSC) is one of three large-scale sequencing centers funded by National Institutes of Health. As one of the three major centers in the United States, Baylor HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work with cutting edge genomic science. We continuously seek individuals who are looking to work in a diverse research environment that supports ongoing genomics research, improvements in sequencing technology and genome analysis.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
We are currently seeking a Bioinformatics Programmer who will be responsible for scientific programming and quantitative analysis in a fast-paced, highly-motivated academic environment.

Duties primarily involve developing and refining all aspects of high-throughput genome resequencing and assembly pipeline. This position provides the unique opportunity to be at the forefront of computational genetics, working with one of the largest sequence variant and phenotype data set ever generated.

The successful applicant will take part in world class genomics projects that are driving our current understanding of biology and medicine. These include sequencing of the Drosophila genetic reference panel –- an association panel of 192 D. melanogaster strains with extensive quantitative trait data including life span, alcohol tolerance and gene expression levels to enable association with DNA sequence polymorphisms. As well as the 1000 genomes human genome sequencing project, cancer genome sequencing and multiple human disease oriented human genome sequencing projects.

    REQUIREMENTS:
The successful applicant will be fluent in Perl and have experience with UNIX shell script.

Position requirements include a Master's degree in Computer Science or Biological Sciences, and quantitative analysis experience using Perl in a UNIX environment.

Education: Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Biological Sciences.

Experience: Required: Two years experience in scientific programming with applications to biological research or a Master's degree in Computer Science or Biological Sciences.

    PREFERENCES:
Familiarity with DNA sequencing technology and quantitative sequence analysis experience a plus. Familiarity with Java, C++, Ruby, and/or Python is also a plus.

    HOW TO APPLY:
Our positions are processed through the Baylor College of Medicine Human Resources Department. For information about how to apply for this opening please visit the BCM employment website: https://www.medschooljobs.org/.

Qualified candidates may also submit resumes via mail, e-mail or fax to:
