Opportunity: Sr. Scientific Programmer, NexGen Sequencing Informatics @ Baylor HGSC--Houston, TX (US)
Submitted by Roxanne Reyna; posted on Thursday, October 22, 2009
    BACKGROUND:
The Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor HGSC) is one of three large-scale sequencing centers funded by National Institutes of Health. As one of the three major centers in the United States, Baylor HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work with cutting edge genomic science. We continuously seek individuals who are looking to work in a diverse research environment that supports ongoing genomics research, improvements in sequencing technology and genome analysis.

The HGSC work environment is fast paced, high energy, with a strong team spirit and dedication to delivering the world-class scientific results with tight schedules and modest budgets. We are always looking for new ideas, methodologies and technologies that help us deal with the interesting problems we face on a daily basis.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Next-generation Sequencing Informatics group is looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong computer science background who is excited by the computational challenges of high-throughput genomic sequencing. With the rapidly advancing and improving next-generation DNA sequencing technologies, there is an ever-increasing data volume that stresses the computational resources used to process and analyze this data.

In this group, all of our data processing and analysis is done in the context of a UNIX environment, using vendor software and open source tools. Responsibilities include all aspects of NexGen sequence analysis; this consists of the actual sequencing instruments, data transfer pipelines, analysis pipelines and downstream analysis.

    REQUIREMENTS:
Education Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related programming field.

Experience Required: Three years experience in scientific programming.

    Requirements:
    - UNIX enthusiast
    - Solid knowledge of UNIX/Linux at the user/programmer level.
    - Deep understanding of Computer Science & Software Engineering Principals
    - Expert knowledge in at least one scripting language (Preferably Ruby)
    - Comfortable working in a team and switching frequently between tasks

    PREFERENCES:
    - High-performance Cluster Computing Experience (LSF a plus)
    - Distributed programming
    - C/C++, Perl
    - System administration experience
    - Computational Genomics or Bioinformatics experience

    HOW TO APPLY:
Our positions are processed through the Baylor College of Medicine Human Resources Department. For information about how to apply for this opening please visit the BCM employment website: https://www.medschooljobs.org.

Qualified candidates may also submit resumes via mail, e-mail or fax to:
