Opportunity: Postdoctoral Fellow, Statistician, Team 149 @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute--Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Wednesday, November 04, 2009
    BACKGROUND:
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI) is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease, and has played a major role in sequencing the human genome and characterising patterns of human sequence variation.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project: Statistical analyses to identify disease-causing genetic variants.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow to join the Genetic Epidemiology Group at WTSI. The successful candidate will be involved in the design and analysis of large scale genomic epidemiological studies. Specifically, the successful candidate will be involved in developing statistical approaches to examine data generated by new DNA sequencing technologies, including analyses of sequence functionality and rare and common genetic variants in the context of complex diseases and traits.

There is a strong commitment to personal and professional development with the group, and the successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their own ideas and build-up a strong academic profile.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    - Applicants will have a numerate first degree (natural/biological sciences, maths or statistics) and a PhD in genetic epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related discipline.

    - The successful candidate will have expertise in high throughput data manipulation, analysis and visualisation using relevant statistical packages (R) and programming languages (Perl or C).

    - It is also essential that the candidate has clear communication skills with the ability to present methodologies and results succinctly and the ability to work within a team.

    PREFERENCES:
    - Experience of analysis and handling large data sets, including genomic data, additional languages, and proficiency in the use of relational databases would be desirable.

    - Familiarity with Linux network/server administration would also be an advantage.

    TERMS:
Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. The post is a three year fixed-term contract.

    SALARY & BENEFITS:
Salary £28000 to £34433pa dependent on experience.

The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk/.

    HOW TO APPLY:
To submit your CV and apply for this job please go to https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk to register and apply on line.

Informal enquiries to Manj Sandhu (ms23@sanger.ac.uk or manj@srl.cam.ac.uk) and additional information about the Genetic Epidemiology Group can be found at http://www.phpc.cam.ac.uk/Sandhu.htm.

    DEADLINE:
The closing date for applications is 20 November 2009.
