Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Systems Engineer I @ Vanderbilt University Center for Human Genetics--Nashville, TN (US)

BACKGROUND:
The Vanderbilt University Center for Human Genetics research is seeking an entry-level software developer to create scripted software for data management and formatting of large genotyping datasets. This position will be integral to Vanderbilt's BioVU biorepository initiative. The biorepository will be used to discover genes associated with common, complex diseases such as heart disease. The candidate will work with investigators to retrieve, format, and analyze large genetic datasets.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide installation, customizing, maintenance and expert technical support system software and utilities.
- Database development and software design
- Web development
- Assist with training and educational support to users of shared resource lab
- Actively identify and participate in training, education and development activities to improve own knowledge and performance to sustain and enhance professional development
REQUIREMENTS
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Computer Science, or Mathematics.
PREFERENCES
- Programming experience in a UNIX/LINUX environment
- Broad knowledge of biology, especially genetics
- Experience and aptitude for handling large datasets, data mining, and data analysis
- Experience with trouble ticket systems
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Scripting in Bash, Perl, or other shell scripting languages in UNIX environment
- Database design, SQL, PL/SQL
- Software Testing and Qualification
- Ability to use Microsoft Excel and related applications
TERMS
This is a full-time position; 40 hour per week; Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
SALARY & COMPENSATION
Negotiable. Salary is dependent upon years of education and experience.
