Submitted by Brady Young; posted on Friday, March 26, 2010

    BACKGROUND

The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a non-profit biomedical research institute based in Phoenix, Arizona, focused on research that can help patients with cancer, neurological disorders, diabetes and other debilitating conditions. Working with a worldwide network of collaborators in the scientific and medical communities, TGen researchers study the genetic components of both common and complex diseases. Through genomic analysis, we learn how DNA, genes and proteins the microscopic building block of life can affect human health. Our 41 lead investigators and nearly 300 support personnel at sites in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Flagstaff, Arizona, are dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life through precision medicine, best defined as the right therapy, for the right patient, at the right time.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

TGen is looking for an experienced Bioinformatician to lead the Bioinformatics Service Center in the newly established Collaborative Center for Bioinformatics (CCB). The successful applicant will apply bioinformatics, database and programming skills to assist TGen scientific staff in identifying relevant data sources, automating repetitive bioinformatics tasks, extracting custom datasets, developing data analysis tools and translating prototype informatics tools into more polished tools suitable for wider usage or release to the scientific community.

    Duties:
    • Lead a team of bioinformaticians in support of TGen researchers.
    • Develop scientific-based software independently and in a team environment.
    • Analyze data, evaluate results, form conclusions, and provide and/or implement product, process, or document improvements.
    • Integrate genome-wide sequence, gene expression, proteomics, pathway, DNA copy number, and genome-wide association databases to support drug target discovery and personalized medicine.
    • Assist in defining software development project plans, including scoping, scheduling, and implementation.
    • Research, identify, analyze, and fulfill requirements of all internal and external program users.
    • Consistently write, translate, and code software programs and applications according to specifications.
    • Write programming scripts to enhance functionality and/or performance of applications as necessary.
    • Design, run and monitor software performance tests on new and existing programs for the purposes of correcting errors, isolating areas for improvement, and general debugging.
    • Administer critical analysis of test results and deliver solutions to problem areas.
    • Design and implement statistical and probability algorithms.
    • Develop rapid prototype algorithms and develop and deploy for distributed parallel processing.
    • Recommend, schedule, and perform software improvements and upgrades.
    • Conduct research on emerging application development software products, languages, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Masters Degree in Computer Science, Biology, or Bioinformatics
    • 5+ years experience in Bioinformatics
    • 3+ years supervisory experience is preferred
    • A proven track record in bioinformatics
    • Ability to lead and motivate a team of bioinformaticians
    • A strong background in one or more of the disciplines of software development, mathematics and statistics
    • Ability to conduct research into bioinformatics-related issues and products
    • Highly self motivated and directed
    • Keen attention to detail
    • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
    • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
    • Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
