    Opportunity: Bioinformatics Engineer I (#JJR21930) @ Vanderbilt University Center for Human Genetics Research--Nashville, TN (US)

    The Vanderbilt University Center for Human Genetics research is seeking an entry-level software developer to create scripted software for data management and formatting of large genotyping datasets. This position will be integral to the Program in Computational Genomics which is conducting multiple large scale genomic studies to discover genes associated with common and complex diseases, such as heart disease and pharmacogenomic outcomes. The candidate will work with investigators to retrieve and format genetic datasets generated from various platforms such as: Sequenom, IIIumina and Affymetrix.


    • Provide installation, customizing, maintenance and expert technical support for system software and utilities.
    • Database development and software design
    • Provide courteous educational and training support for a shared resource core.
    • Actively identify and participate in training, education and development activities to improve own knowledge and performance to sustain and enhance professional development.


    • This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Computer Science, or Mathematics.
    • Programming experience in a UNIX/LINUX environment
    • Broad knowledge of biology, especially genetics
    • Experience and aptitude for handling large genotyping datasets, clinical data and data mining
    • Experience with trouble ticket systems
    • Strong oral and written communication skills


    • Scripting in Bash, Perl, or other shell scripting languages in UNIX environment.
    • Database design, SQL, PL/SQL
    • Software testing
    • Ability to use Microsoft Excel and related applications
