    RESPONSIBILITIES

    J. Craig Venter Institute ("JCVI"), a dynamic non-profit scientific research organization is currently seeking a Bioinformatics Engineer to join the viral genomics informatics team. The Bioinformatics Engineer is responsible for operating, supporting, maintaining, developing, integrating, and deploying bioinformatics tools and databases, supporting the scientific mission of the viral genomics group at JCVI. Additionally, Bioinformatics Engineers are responsible for data management and analysis of biological datasets. Bioinformatics Engineers frequently act as a liaison between Bioinformatics Analysts and Software Engineers to develop novel Bioinformatic analyses and software pipelines.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • BS, MS or PhD in Bioinformatics Biological Science or Computer Science
    • Specific technical skills and experience that are desired:
    • - Perl and OO-Perl libraries (CPAN, Moose, BioPerl)
    • - Bioinformatics tools and techniques (Annotation, Gene clusters, HMMs, BLAST)
    • - Relational Database and SQL knowledge (Sybase, Oracle, MySQL)
    • - Data Modeling (UML,ER, Ontology-based)
    • - Operating Systems: UNIX/Linux and Grid technologies, including Sun Grid Engine
    • - Knowledge of biological sciences and/or a desire to learn about viral biology
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to collaborate across a multi-disciplinary team, and work independently
