RESPONSIBILITIES
J. Craig Venter Institute (“JCVI”), a dynamic non-profit scientific research organization is currently seeking a Bioinformatics Analyst. The Bioinformatics Analyst will work on the preparation, maintenance, curation, and analysis of viral genomic data supporting the various viral genomics research at JCVI. Responsibilities include but not limited to designing sequence primers, validating finished genomes, designing and implementing gene prediction programs, annotation of genome and data analysis for research and publication using bioinformatics tools and a variety of database and software applications. The ideal candidate will have hands-on research experience in high-through-put viral genomics, and demonstrated competence in bioinformatics including Perl, SQL, PHP, and cgi-scripting.
REQUIREMENTS
- Successful candidates will have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the Biological Sciences, plus experience working with computers in the field of biological sciences and familiarity with DNA sequence and annotation tools.
- Candidates will also have a demonstrated competence in appropriate computer languages including Perl, SQL, PHP and cgi-scripting; Operating Systems including UNIX and UNIX variants, Windows, and/or Macintosh; Relational Database including knowledge of Sybase and SQL.
- The Bioinformatics Analyst will have a solid knowledge of molecular biology as it relates to DNA sequences, sequencing technologies and genomics.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent organization and time management skills, ability to meet schedules, the ability to collaborate across a multi-disciplinary team, and work independently is a must.
PREFERENCES
- Strong skills in phylogenetics, genome comparison and polymorphism analysis is desired, and knowledge about vaccine research/technology will be an added advantage.
