BACKGROUND

A prestigious new MRC Strategic Programme in Computational Genomics Analysis and Training (CGAT; http://www.cgat.org) has recently been awarded to Professor Chris Ponting of FGU and will involve 12 research staff over a period of 5 years. CGAT will train 8 postdoctoral scientists in computational genomics thereby providing expertise and added-value to other UK-wide institutions.

We are looking for ambitious, numerate and self-motivated scientists interested in computational genomics and the biological interpretation of next-generation sequencing data. These are training positions, offering rare opportunities for scientists to transition from biological or biomedical backgrounds to future independent careers in genome research. As CGAT Fellows you will acquire computational expertise and skills required to take full advantage of recent exciting advances in sequencing technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Each Fellow will be assigned to diverse genomics projects that all focus on the analysis and biological interpretation of next-generation sequence data. Projects are collaborative involving scientists from across the UK. Training will be provided through close mentoring by a senior CGAT scientist, as well as through tailored courses and tutorials.

REQUIREMENTS

A PhD / DPhil in biology, medical biology or a field relevant to computational genomics is essential.
Excellent organisational and communication skills will be required, together with the ability to work well independently and within a team.
A willingness and ability to learn advanced computational and statistical skills, as well as a good familiarity of working with computers and office software are required.

TERMS

These 3 year fixed term training positions are available immediately.

LOCALE

The post-holders will work in the MRC Unit within the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford, based in the modern Henry Wellcome Building of Gene Function. COMPENSATION

The post-holders will be entitled to benefits including a generous holiday entitlement, an excellent pension scheme and access to MRC training. Starting salary up to £28,178 per annum depending on experience.
