    Opportunity: Scientific Data Management Specialist @ Computercraft--Bethesda, MD (US)

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Computercraft seeks a Scientific Data Management Specialist to receive, process, and solicit genetic sequencing data sets from scientific projects and investigators. The individual will also analyze sequence data and metadata to address questions about the content of large data sets, and help establish data processing pipelines. Candidates with a background in biology, genetics, population genetics, genomics, or medical/disease genetics including linkage/genome wide association studies who enjoy using computers to work with data hands on are encouraged to apply.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Formal Education (minimum: Masters of Science in Biology, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics)
    • Programming experience in a UNIX/LINUX environment
    • Broad knowledge of biology, especially genetics, cell biology, and molecular biology
    • Experience and aptitude for handling large datasets, data mining, and data analysis
    • Strong oral and written communication skills

    PREFERENCES

    • Solid scripting abilities in Perl, Bash, sh, or other shell scripting languages in a UNIX or LINUX environment
    • Relational database skills: multi-table SQL queries, bcp
    • Experience in C or C++
    • Experience defining and implementing quality-assurance protocols to evaluate the impact of software changes on the results that are generated by said software
    • Routinely utilizes public molecular biology resources, such as GenBank, UniProt, PDB
    • Ability to use Microsoft Excel and related applications
    • Statistical analysis skills
    • Object oriented analysis and design experience

    LOCALE

    This is a full-time position located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The individual will work together with experts from NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
