BACKGROUND
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is a premier center for research and treatment of potentially fatal childhood diseases, including cancer and certain blood, genetic, and immunodeficiency disorders. The hospital's mission is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Currently, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has an opening for a Bioinformatics Research Scientist (Job Number 20605).
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Bioinformatics Research Scientist in the Information Sciences Department takes a lead role in data analysis, method development, software evaluation, and training in order to advance biomedical research programs at SJCRH. Examines data from next-generation sequencing instruments, microarrays, proteomics, public databases and other sources, and performs analyses typically including discovery of genetic variants, differential gene expression, abnormal regulation, and disease associations. Maintains knowledge of current bioinformatics methods, modifying them or combining them as needed for specific goals. Compares available academic, open source, or commercial software to determine which are most appropriate for a given project. Provides help with scientific software, databases, and other computational resources to hospital staff. Ensures that efficient and prompt help is provided to SJCRH investigators.
REQUIREMENTS
- Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, or related field plus four (4) years of postdoctoral and/or job experience in Computational Biology or Bioinformatics research is required.
- Experience with programming languages such as Perl, C, C++, SQL or Java is required.
PREFERENCES
- Experience with microarray data analysis and scripting experience using R or a comparable statistics package is preferred.
- Prior experience with pathways, comparative genomics, SNP or proteomics data analysis is also a plus.
