BACKGROUND
Digicon Corporation, established in 1985, is a full-service Information Technology Integrator and Solutions Provider to both government and commercial customers. Digicon employs approximately 300 employees throughout the Washington metropolitan area, as well as several other major cities across the nation.
We are currently in search for a Junior Scientific Programmer to work at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) in Bethesda, MD. This is a full-time employee position with Digicon Corporation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant will actively participate with other members of the Bioinformatics team in the support of a modern, high-throughput, genomic DNA sequencing facility. Duties of the position include the maintenance of existing software packages that track and process raw sequence data, provide analytical tools for DNA Finishing, generate quality and progress reports, as well as package and track submission of data to public repositories such as the NCBI. Extension of existing Perl programs, web-based interactive tools and Oracle database queries will be required as sequence management and analysis needs evolve.
REQUIREMENTS
At least two years of programming experience, including:
- At least one year professional experience programming in object-oriented Perl & CGI
- One or more years of experience programming in Java
- At least one year professional experience with relational database development
- Solid knowledge of SQL, HTML, and UNIX shell scripting
- Experience developing and deploying applications on UNIX platforms, including large Linux HPC systems
- One or more years of experience in web page development and support
Education Requirements:
- B.S. in Computer Science or related field required
- Background in the biological sciences or bioinformatics is helpful, but not required
All candidates must be authorized to work in the US for any employer and able to pass a background check. No relocation assistance is available.
PREFERENCES
- Prior use of Version Control software (Subversion)
- Familiarity with Oracle DB querying using DBI and SQL Plus
- Understanding of computational infrastructure including efficient approaches to I/O, data storage and memory/cpu load balancing on shared systems with job queuing
- Experience with NextGen sequence data processing, particularly for Illumina and Roche platforms
- Programming support on bioinformatics projects
- Familiarity with public bioinformatics databases and tools (e.g., Entrez, BLAST, UCSC Genome Browser, Consed, samtools, BWA, Galaxy, etc.)
- Experience with other programming languages, including C, C++, Python
- Fluency in both written and spoken English, accompanied by strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Proven critical thinking skills and a demonstrated ability to develop robust solutions to programming problems
- Must possess the ability to work independently with little direct supervision in a multi-tasking environment
- Must possess the willingness and ability to work in support role and a basic research environment with both programmers and scientists
- Must be well organized and have substantial experience in writing formal documentation
- Must have a cooperative and service-oriented attitude, be able to work under pressure and maintain a professional demeanor
