    Opportunity: Senior COMPUTER BIOLOGIST (#81011) @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute--Hinxton/Cambridge, UK

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    A skilled Computer Biologist is sought as part of a study to identify new therapeutic strategies for improved treatment of cancer patients.

    We have the world's largest public database of cancer drug sensitivity data as well as a wealth of genetic information. A unique opportunity has arisen for you to take a lead role in developing the informatics resources to support our research. This will include developing and maintaining our database, designing new analytical tools, and co-ordinating data sharing with our collaborators. You will be working with the latest technology in a freethinking and dynamic environment. We are looking for an individual who has good communication skills and enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary team environment to help solve complex problems.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Essential Skills:
    • A good degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics or Computational Biology (or equivalent industry experience)
    • Proficient in PERL scripting language
    • Good database skills and an understanding of RDBMSs
    • Good communication skills and enjoy working as part of a team

    PREFERENCES

    Ideal Skills:
    • A PhD level qualification is desirable
    • Knowledge of PERL CGI, JavaScript/AJAX and Java/C/C++ would also be beneficial
    • Experience with Oracle databases would be ideal and experience with PostgreSQL or MySQL databases would be useful
    • An interest in genetics and cancer therapeutics would be advantageous

    COMPENSATION

    Salary: GBP 27316 to GBP 37690 per annum dependent on experience
