BACKGROUND
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is a premier center for research and treatment of potentially fatal childhood diseases, including cancer and certain blood, genetic, and immunodeficiency disorders. The hospital's mission is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Currently, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has an opening for a Senior Software Engineer (Job Number 20734).
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Software Engineer in the Computational Biology Department under minimal supervision, is responsible for submitting the whole-genome sequencing data and other related genomic information to the public databases by developing a streamlined data submission process. Works closely with faculty members who participate in the genome research projects to gather, identify and QA meta-data required for submission. Communicate with staffs at the public databases as well as IT and bioinformatics scientists at St. Jude to address all issues related to large-scale genomic data storage, transfer and submission. Participates in the development of an integrated data management system for large-scale cancer genomic data.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer or physical science, or related field plus five (5) years of experience in software, visualization, web application and database development is required. Master's degree preferred. One year of experience required with a Master's degree. Must be able to develop software in the following programming languages used within the department: C, C++, Perl, SQL, and Java. Must have prior experience in working with large data sets.
PREFERENCES
Familiarity with statistical analysis methods and languages such as R is preferred. Experience in a research or academic setting preferred.
