BACKGROUND:
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

The Sanger Institute is a world leader in the use of large-scale sequencing, informatics and analysis of genetic variation. We use sequence data to further our understanding of infectious disease and generate resources of lasting value to biomedical research. The Parasite Genomics group is a multidisciplinary team that uses large-scale approaches to study parasite species associated with diseases of global importance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
We are seeking to recruit an experienced bioinformatician, to contribute to and develop and maintain software systems to support the work of the helminth (parasitic worm) genome improvement team within the parasite genomics group. The successful candidate will work within the helminth genome improvement team and in collaboration with the pathogen informatics team, to develop robust tools and pipelines to process sequence data for genome improvement and provide ad-hoc bioinformatics support to the genome improvement team. This position is highly collaborative in nature therefore strong communication skills and willingness to work collaboratively in a team setting are essential.

REQUIREMENTS:
Essential Skills:
* PhD (or MSc plus extensive practical experience) in bioinformatics or a related area
* Significant demonstrable experience in bioinformatics
* Experienced Perl or Python programmer
* Knowledge and experience of UNIX / LINUX on an advanced level
* Experience of dealing with large data sets and running software on a compute farm
* Highly developed problem solving skills
* Excellent communication skills
* Good theoretical knowledge of DNA & RNA bioinformatics

PREFERENCES:
Ideal Skills:
* Experience of training and supervising other team members
* Experience with processing next-generation sequencing data
* Knowledge of parasitology
* Working knowledge of molecular biology
* Good theoretical knowledge of common molecular biological approaches incl. cloning & DNA manipulation

COMPENSATION:
Salary range GBP 27316 to GBP 37690 per annum dependent on experience.
