    Opportunity: Software Developer / Programmer I (#217282JC) @ Baylor College of Medicine--Houston, TX (US)

    BACKGROUND

    To provide planning, design, implementation, testing and documentation of software and database applications that support the mission of the Department of Pediatrics, Section of Tropical Medicine of Baylor College of Medicine (BCM)/Texas Children's Hospital (TCH). The application specifications must integrate into the software systems supported by the BCM and Research Informatics. This position is responsible for coordinating application projects, as well as interpreting specifications and requirements into code.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Coordinates and participates in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of software applications developed and supported by Research Informatics. Has extensive knowledge in understanding, integration and use of programming languages (e.g., C#, C++, Visual Studio .NET, Java), database management systems (e.g., Access, SQL Server, ORACLE), Internet Tools (e.g., ASP.NET and Javascript) and graphical software (e.g., Visio and PowerPoint) to propose and develop solutions to application projects. Is capable of database application development with general supervision, from the design phase to implementation, testing and maintenance. Assists in design of software and programming applications, including Internet-based software applications. Assists in customizing off-shelf applications, in particular, the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); in maintaining program libraries and with maintaining technical manuals. Resolves software problems faced by users and responds positively to suggestions for improvements and enhancements. Shows interest in learning additional technical skills and software programming skills. Provide on-call support as needed.

    2. Documents software applications developed by Research Informatics, including the maintenance of data dictionaries. Leads and participates in the development and review of documentation for software applications. Responsible for the accuracy, understandability and maintenance of these documents.

    3. Provides project leadership. Provides education, direction and guidance to individuals assigned to projects under the leadership of this position. Assists the Director of Research Informatics with recruitment and training of members in the software development team.

    4. Acts as a liaison between senior leadership and technical staff of the Department of Pediatrics, Section Tropical Medicine with the staff and Director of Research Informatics.

    5. Advises, trains and assists the personnel of the Section of Tropical Medicine in the use of software applications developed and supported by Research Informatics. Develops training materials for users. Develops and oversees the development of customized reports and analyses as required. Participates in BCM/TCH workshops and seminars in order to identify existing and to anticipate future software application requirements.

    6. Continues education in computer science and information technology in order to propose and implement state-of-the-art concepts and technical solutions.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems or equivalent technical experience
    • One year of experience in software, application and database development preferred
    Technical Skills Required:
    • Extensive knowledge and experience with object oriented programming
    • Experience in developing database applications and assisting with design of databases
    • Experience and knowledge in cryptography, encryption and encoding algorithms and systems
    • Ability to participate in software/hardware release and installation tasks
    • Assists with design, benchmark testing, debugging and maintenance tasks for all the software and programming applications used and maintained by Research Informatics
    • Experience in developing Internet-based applications with Active Server Pages and Java applets
    • Experience in maintaining technical manuals
    • Experience in working with SQL Server and related client-server applications
    • Proficiency in Windows and UNIX operating systems
    • Experience in Internet-based applications and development

    PREFERENCES

    • Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology or related field
