Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Scientist (#717) @ Broad Institute--Cambridge, MA (US)
Submitted by Laura Bonfitto; posted on Tuesday, March 06, 2012

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Overall Responsibility:
This individual will work to develop this database and associated Web-based tools that enable computational and experimental biologists to integrate and analyze data from various high-throughput biology projects, including small-molecule, RNAi, and genomic variation data in cancer-related cell lines. Specific work will focus on the development of an integrated data model and associated means to query the integrated data in a robust, easy to use and stable manner. We envision that a working database, object-relational mapping, and initial query tools will comprise the main work products for the first 12-18 months. An important goal for that term will be to provide for easy maintenance of the database by computational biologists in the future. An overarching responsibility of this individual will be to work closely members of the Cancer Program and Chemical Biology Program communities to help to set and execute a longer term vision for data integration at the interface of these disciplines.

    Characteristic Duties:
    • Develop and implement a finalized schema from an existing information model
    • Integrate data across formats and sources by robust synchronization with existing transactional systems
    • Work with researchers to specify, design, and implement database-driven Web applications that serve as a front-end to retrieval and analysis tools
    • Design and implement interfaces to back-end analysis tools
    • Enable computational scientists to build sophisticated queries and tools by creating materialized views and object-relational maps facilitating rapid prototyping of new analyses
    • Work with technical writers to document functionality

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Experience with Java technologies and frameworks such as Spring and Hibernate
    • Experience with client-side libraries such as SmartGWT
    • Proficiency in Web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, etc.); web services experience desirable
    • Proficiency in SQL and database design, preferably Oracle, and object-relational mapping; familiarity with genomic databases helpful
    • Sensitivity to end-user needs, reflected in design of user interface and application workflow
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
    • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving, organizational, and people skills
    • Adaptable to rapidly-changing and high-demand environments
    • PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, or related scientific field with programming experience
    • Exposure to an analytic field such as bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, or statistics desirable
