    Opportunity: Staff Scientist in the Bioinformatics Resource Center @ Vanderbilt University--Nashville, TN (US)

    OVERVIEW

    The Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC) is seeking a Staff Scientist to join a diverse bioinformatics team working on projects in cancer and other complex diseases using bioinformatics and systems biology approaches. The successful candidate should have experience analyzing high-throughput genomic datasets derived from microarray and next generation technologies as well as familiarity with available third party software packages useful to analyzing these data. The Staff Scientist is expected to work both independently on genomics data analysis and work closely with many investigators and/or collaborators who generate genomics data in the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Assists the Principal Investigator with grant and manuscript preparation. Independently carries out and designs highly sophisticated and independent experiments involving bioinformatics and systems biology approaches. Mentors and trains post doctoral fellows and graduate students in developing their research projects and skills. Assists in the leadership and supervision of the Bioinformatics Resource Center research team.

    Key Functions and Expected Performance:
    • Assist in planning, directing, and supervising the bioinformatics operation in BRC.
    • Work closely with the Program Coordinator to manage and supervise the BRC research team and continuously maintain the ongoing efficiency of the BRC's operations and projects.
    • Consult with investigators to plan project scope, methods and data-analysis needs.
    • Assist the Principal Investigator with grant and manuscript preparation.
    • Provide regular and well-documented project reports.
    • Oversee the progress of bioinformatics analysis to meet project deadlines.
    • Lead the development and acquisition of novel methods and techniques for specific research projects related to deep-sequencing and microarray efforts.
    • Write necessary computer programs to assist on data process and analysis.
    • Work with department IT staff to provide computer technical support in BRC including data process and transfer, server maintenance, and technical support for other members.
    • Assist with training junior level investigators and/or trainees, especially postdoctoral fellows and staff support.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Job requires Doctorate and 2 years of experience or the equivalent
    • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related area
    • Minimum one year of post-doctoral work experience in high-throughput genomic dataset analysis or related field(s)
    • Demonstrated skills in at least one programming language (Perl, R, Java)
    • Familiarity with database building/searches
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Excellent time management skills, especially involving the simultaneous management of multiple projects
    • Leadership skills and ability to work well in a team environment
    • Ability to work independently with a high level of self-motivation

    TERMS

    This is a full-time, salaried position. Expected schedule is Monday - Friday, with occasional variation based on research needs.

    COMPENSATION

    Salary is commensurate upon years of education and experience.
