Submitted by Matt; posted on Wednesday, June 20, 2012

The Partners Center for Personalized Genetic Medicine (PCPGM) leverages advances in genetics to help realize the promise of personalized medicine and improve the care of patients both inside and outside the Partners HealthCare system. This center hosts sequencing, genotyping, and microarray cores in addition to a CLIA-certified clinical diagnostic laboratory. In an effort to expand our bioinformatics infrastructure, we are looking to hire an associate bioinformatician that could support our growing informatics needs. This position offers an opportunity to become a part of a highly engaged team with multiple interactions across the Center, including with members of the research cores, clinical laboratory, and IT team.

Duties will include building pipeline prototypes for next-generation sequencing applications and providing informatics support in the development of clinical diagnostic tests.

The successful candidate should have a strong scientific background with prior exposure to genetics and/or genomics, excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and the ability to interact with multidisciplinary staff in a fast-paced environment. You will be joining a small team and therefore must be willing and able to prioritize and manage a variety of tasks, and to shift priorities rapidly.

    • Bachelor's degree in computer science or bioinformatics.
    • Basic knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and scientific programming.
    • Experience in a Unix/Linux environment, including proficiency in shell scripting, and scripting in a language such as Perl or Python (preferably Perl).
    • Some experience with R statistical package or MatLab.
    • Familiarity with common NGS tools (BWA/GATK/Picard Tools, etc).
    • Familiarity using common bioinformatics databases (UCSC, NCBI, etc).
    • Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.
    • Strong interest in molecular biology and genetics, and a willingness to learn concepts and terminology from these fields as needed.

    • Thesis-level work showing scientific analytical thinking is a major plus.
    • 1-2 years of experience in software development is a plus.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a diverse team, while contributing to a high-quality and respectful work environment.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to colleagues and staff across multi-disciplinary areas.
    • Ability to partner with others to establish realistic goals and deliver work on schedule.
