BACKGROUND
J. Craig Venter Institute, a dynamic, world leading scientific research institute is seeking to fill a Post Doctoral Fellow position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for executing funded research projects focused on the analysis of metagenomic and other `omics' data derived from the human microbiome and other environments. Analyses will broadly focus on systems-level studies of microbial communities including taxonomic and functional analysis of metagenomic and RNA-seq data, metabolic pathway reconstruction and modeling, discovery of biomarkers relevant to human disease and environmental adaptation, and evolutionary studies.
The Post Doctoral Fellow research areas will include studies of the human microbiome and other environments through the integration of `omics' approaches, quantitative and statistical methods development for the analysis of structured high-dimensional phenotypic, genetic, genomic, and metagenomic data in a multi-disciplinary environment. The candidate should be broadly conversant with statistics and bioinformatic techniques for genomic and metagenomic data analysis, and will collaborate closely with software developers for methods implementation and with experimental laboratories for validation of computational results.
REQUIREMENTS
Successful candidates will have a Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Biology, or a related field; proficiency in statistical programming and/or scripting languages appropriate for scalable data analysis (e.g., R, Perl, Python, Ruby etc.); comfort and experience with programming for biological data analysis; familiarity with functional genetic and/or genomic data, as indicated by publication record; ability to communicate scientific material and collaborate well. Experience in computational modeling such as flux balance analysis and laboratory experience is a plus.
