Opportunity: Software Developer @ Weill Cornell Medical College--New York, NY (US)
Submitted by Doron Betel; posted on Wednesday, July 18, 2012
BACKGROUND
The Epigenomics Core Facility at Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) is recruiting a software developer for the analysis, management and visualizing of multidimensional, high throughout genomics, epigenomics and other large scale biological data.
The Epigenomics Core Facility provides a wide range of epigenomic resources and services to the WCMC community and collaborating institutes that are primarily based on high-throughput sequencing approaches. These include DNA methylation profiling, protein-DNA interaction (ChIP-seq), RNA-seq and whole genome sequencing. There is strong emphasis on providing computational infrastructure and analysis support to enable novel discoveries and advance clinical applications (epicore.med.cornell.edu).
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and implement computational pipelines for tracking and the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data, including building databases and software infrastructure to handle large data sets processed by in-house and third party algorithms;
- Gather user requirements, design, implement and maintain data storage and management solutions.
- Develop graphical user interfaces and web-based application for analysis of high-throughput sequencing data.
- Develop algorithms and software tools for the analysis of new experimental techniques and provide computational support for the scientific development of the Epigenomics core.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or bioinformatics, with a strong programming background; a graduate degree is preferred.
- Expert-level knowledge of the UNIX/Linux environment, including shell scripting, a high-level scripting language (Perl, Python, or Ruby), and a low-level, object-oriented programming language (C/C++ or Java).
- Experience in using and programming relational databases, including schema design.
- Experience in development and deployment of parallel algorithms in high-performance and cluster computing environments.
- Experience developing web-based applications by PHP, Rails and java scripts.
- Familiarity with the use of open source software libraries in software development.
- Knowledge of a scientific data analysis package such as R or MATLAB, as well as background in the biological sciences, is highly desirable.
