    BACKGROUND

    SAIC-Frederick Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of SAIC, is accelerating the development of new technologies and treatments for patients with cancer and AIDS. SAIC-Frederick is the operations and technical support contractor for the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, a federal national laboratory.

    Program Description:
    The Advanced Biomedical Computing Center (ABCC) is part of the Information Systems Program (ISP) at SAIC-Frederick, Inc (SAIC-F). The ABCC provides technology development, scientific consultation, collaboration and training, and high performance computing support to the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientist and staff.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Responsible for team leadership in bioinformatics core providing support to the US National Cancer Institute Center for Cancer Research. As a key part of the scientific discovery process, learn and adapt technologies, provide bioinformatics analysis, integrate, innovate and deliver results supporting cancer research. Provide biological interpretation of analysis results including mutation impact assessment, pathway analysis, expression analysis, prioritization of identified loci/gene lists and correlation with data from mainstream and leading edge experimental methods. Interact with investigators throughout entire experimental process, from design through results interpretation and manuscript preparation.

    Manage staff providing similar types of assistance in an exciting multi-project, interdisciplinary environment supporting leading research spanning multiple cancer research interests. Coordinate, integrate and utilize applications and databases made available by the Advanced Biomedical Computing Center (ABCC) across the Bethesda, Frederick, Rockville and Gaithersburg FNLCR campuses. Collaborate with peer researchers across ABCC and CCR. Work with SAIC-F and NCI management to develop and execute developmental roadmap to accommodate new initiatives and technologies.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college/university in a bioinformatics or a related field or six (6) years equivalent experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
    • In addition to education requirements, a minimum of four (4) years of related experience in bioinformatics is required along with one (1) year prior supervisory experience in a team-oriented, collaborative, multi-project environment.
    • The candidate must be detail oriented and possess experience in software application development, sequence analysis, microarray analysis and experience with analysis of large genomic data sets including integration with data available from public sources.
    • Hands-on experience in processing and analyzing genomic, expression and other array data is essential.
    • Hands-on experience with commercial and open-source bioinformatics and genomics analysis software is required.
    • Excellent communication and customer relationship skills are also required.
    • This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.

    PREFERENCES

    • Ph.D. degree preferred.
    • Experience in managing bioinformatics projects, project tracking, and upstream experimental design.
    • Experience in molecular biology technologies.
    • Experience in statistical analysis of high throughput biological data using R.
    • Experience in data integration, database construction, application development and visualization.
    • Proficiency in Unix (linux), batch HPC environments, scripting, and programming is highly desirable.
    • Experience training others on bioinformatics technologies is also highly desirable.
