Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Analyst @ J. Craig Venter Institute -- San Diego, CA (US)
Submitted by Julia Lang; posted on Friday, August 31, 2012

    J. Craig Venter Institute ("JCVI"), a dynamic non-profit scientific research organization, is currently seeking one or more Bioinformatics Analyst. This Bioinformatics Analyst position will involve two related activities. One activity will be to develop statistical methods and computational tools for comprehensively identifying, matching and semantically labeling cell populations across multiple flow cytometry (FCM) samples. This activity includes the development of strategies for deriving quantitative and qualitative cellular characteristics from cell populations defined by automated population identification algorithms, semantically query the Cell Ontology to automatically map algorithmically defined cell populations with standardized cell type representations, and developing computational methods to match similar cell populations across multiple samples.

The second activity of this position is to support the FlowCAP group ( ), which works to advance the development of computational methods for the identification of cell populations of interest in FCM data by providing a way to objectively test their performance against benchmark datasets. This position will define FCM data analysis use cases, formalize database, user interface and analysis pipeline functional requirements, and assist in the development of database, user interface and analysis pipeline prototypes.

The Bioinformatics Engineer with spend 100% effort will be spent on the following:
    • Identifying and prioritizing data analysis use cases, and provide analytical solutions
    • Critical assessment of data processing algorithms using FITMaN lyoplate data through the FlowCAP project
    • Provide a user-friendly interface implementing the data analysis pipelines

Successful candidates will have a Master's of Science or Ph.D. degree in the life sciences, public heath or in computer science with strong familiarity with bioinformatics, computational biology, genomic analysis and general life sciences. Additionally candidates will have experience in the following: Data Mining, algorithm development, data clustering, experience working with FCM data, ontology development and use, familiarity with R and Bioconductor, flow cytometry, defining data analysis use case scenarios and functional requirements, and database development.
