Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS / Image Analysis Scientist @ Presage Biosciences -- Seattle, WA (US)
Submitted by Susan Becker; posted on Thursday, October 11, 2012

Presage Biosciences is dedicated to improving the cancer drug development process so that patients can receive the most effective treatment possible. Our proprietary technology platform offers a truly innovative strategy that simultaneously analyzes multiple cancer drug candidates and drug combinations within a single living tumor. This patented technology heralds a new, innovative approach to select optimal drug candidates and efficiently advances cancer therapeutics to the market. We're passionate about creating and exploiting this completely new, unique platform and currently have an opening for a proactive, high energy Bioinformatics Scientist to join our growing team in Seattle, WA.

As a key member of Presage's scientific team, you will have the opportunity to lead the effort in the ongoing build out of the bioinformatics function and play a pivotal role in helping to support our cancer drug development platform. You will initiate, design and manage all bioinformatics efforts aimed at analyzing highly complex histopathology imaging data from side-by-side comparisons of multiple cancer drugs and drug combinations from living tumors. You will also play a pivotal role in making strategic decisions to continue building Presage's bioinformatics capabilities from the early development phase to the production environment, which includes developing and directly managing bioinformatics tools and infrastructure for content management, database searching and integration, systems for analyzing and comparing data within complex databases, and the quality control of production environment data analysis. In addition, you will manage the day-to-day IT function, (partnering with external consultants), provide support for web-based bioinformatics and accessing of public and proprietary relational databases, and act as the bioinformatics project leader with Presage's pharmaceutical partners and other collaborations.

This opportunity requires a detail-oriented, motivated Bioinformatics Scientist with an M.S. degree or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or a related field and 4+ years of related experience in analyzing large scale data sets. Specific experience in formulating innovative bioinformatics strategies in support of a drug development platform is required, as is a background in text data mining, analysis of expression data sets and data visualization. Demonstrated experience evaluating, selecting and adopting emerging data analysis technologies and methods to ensure and maintain industry best practices, as well as a strong understanding of the underlying biology and demonstrated experience developing effective systems for aggregating and analyzing data from diverse sources area are a must. Extensive knowledge of public domain data sources is essential, as is experience with common bioinformatics tools, fluency in a scripting language such as Perl, Python or Ruby, fluency in another high-level language such as C#, Java or C++ and 2 years of experience in Oracle database systems, including both knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL. Must be able to work as part of a lean, flexible team of exceptional scientific professionals in a fast-paced, start-up environment and possess proven interpersonal, prioritizing, analytical and strategic thinking skills.

Experience with high-content computational image analysis is strongly desired, while experience with statistics and statistical software is highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to write custom plug-ins for existing commercial products is a plus.
