Opportunity: Applications Programmer -- Intermediate @ University of Chicago, Human Genetics Department -- Chicago, IL (US)

BACKGROUND
Applications Programmer-Intermediate: The successful candidate will work as a member of the GEDI project team. This project aims to develop integrated computational platform and bioinformatics tools to support genomics and biomedical informatics projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Work cooperatively with the GEDI software development team to:
- Develop computational tools for the analysis of large-scale genomic data
- Develop Web-based, n-tiers high-performance applications
- The work responsibilities include working with biomedical researchers on understanding of bioinformatics use cases, prototyping to address the user requirements and developing and testing production quality code:
- Developing Java-based applications in collaboration with the other members of the team;
- Engineering software through its complete life cycle (databases to user interfaces);
- Performing unit and system integration testing;
- Provide robust documentation for all software projects written in proper English
REQUIREMENTS
- Masters (with 2+ years experience) or Bachelors (with 4+ years experience) in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related computational discipline
- Ability to address project needs with effective and efficient technical solutions
- Must be able to work independently and collaboratively
- Required experiences are:
- Professional programming experience with Java/Java EE
- Working experience with development tools such as Eclipse, NetBeans, Maven, SVN, GIT
- Experience with frameworks such as Spring, Hibernate, JUnit,
- Experience with Tomcat or JBoss, MySQL/Oracle in Linux
- Web Service implementation with SOA and REST architectures
- Scripting languages: Perl, Python or Shell
- Familiarity with High performance computing
- Experience with Web-based applications development using Javascript, JQuery and HTML5 based frameworks
PREFERENCES
- Working knowledge of major public bioinformatics databases and tools
- Knowledge of statistics with R and Matlab
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrate initiative in experimenting with new technologies
