BACKGROUND

The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a non‐profit biomedical research institute based in Phoenix, Arizona, focused on research that can help patients with cancer, neurological disorders, diabetes and other debilitating conditions. Working with a worldwide network of collaborators in the scientific and medical communities, TGen researchers study the genetic components of both common and complex diseases. Through genomic analysis, we learn how DNA, genes and proteins – the microscopic building block of life – can affect human health. Our 41 lead investigators and nearly 300 support personnel at sites in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Flagstaff, Arizona, are dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life through precision medicine, best defined as the right therapy, for the right patient, at the right time.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Brief Posting Description:
TGen is seeking an experienced and highly motivated bioinformatics scientist to take a lead role in Mass-Spectrometry based Proteomics data mining, statistical analysis, and experimental design in protein identification, phosphoproteomics, biomarker discovery and validation projects.

Detailed Description:
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a highly collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment to enable TGen's research objectives with a focus on analyzing proteomics data. An orientation to human DNA and RNA sequencing is advantageous. Additional responsibilities include: Consult with researchers to analyze problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine computational strategies. Identify and execute innovative solutions (statistical, machine learning, Bayesian, and signal processing based) that will quantifiably improve projects. Generate preliminary results for grant proposals. Populate and query publicly accessible, commercial, or proprietary proteomic, or genomic databases.

REQUIREMENTS

The position requires a fundamental understanding of separation science and mass spectrometry. The successful candidate is expected to lead and help the preparation and presentation of publications, posters, reports etc.

Job Requirements:

A PhD in bioinformatics, mathematics, statistics, computational biology, computer science, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Expertise in developing algorithms for pattern recognition, classification and prediction, statistical data analysis and data mining
Strong programming skills in scientific software development. Experience with bioinformatics software packages, database systems for biomedical data, genomic and proteomic databases. Familiarity with languages such as R, Python, Java, or C++/C# is preferred.
The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated ability to multi-task, complete projects and publish results in a timely manner.
The successful candidate must have a good publication record during his PhD and subsequent job positions, must be a team player, self-motivated, independent and with a can-do attitude.

ABOUT US

Additional Details:
The Center for Proteomics is a new 3400 sq. ft. facility outfitted with state-of the-art nano-LC, mass spectrometers, and relevant laboratory equipment. In addition to providing a core resource to support collaborative proteomics studies within the TGen community, this new facility will house a world-class, first-of-its kind, industrial scale, yet academically oriented, high-throughput Proteomics Biomarker Validation Unit focused on targeted proteomic technologies such as Multiple Reaction Monitoring Mass Spectrometry and antibody-based enrichment strategies.

The Center for Proteomics aligns with TGen's world-recognized experts in DNA and RNA sequencing, where discovery of novel spliced genes contributes to understanding human disease; additionally, the Center's phosphoproteomics competencies support Systems Biology and drug discovery & development of targeted therapeutics. Inter- and intra-institutional collaborations with health care professionals, policy makers, and researchers in the discovery, development, and validation of diagnostic biomarkers and targeted therapies (precision medicine) keep this opportunity at the forefront of this fast-moving translational field.
