Opportunity: Application Engineer II -- chemical biology platform (#882) @ Broad Institute -- Cambridge, MA (US)
Submitted by Laura Bonfitto; posted on Sunday, November 11, 2012

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The Application Engineer will work with the Therapeutics Discovery and Development (TDD) platform within the Broad Institute to provide informatics solutions and support for all aspects of hit and lead discovery. Systems include electronic lab notebooks, LIMS for managing laboratory robotics, liquid handlers and detection technologies, tools to design and assess compound collections and analogs, databases and data import tools, and data validation, analysis and decision support environments. Must be able to effectively communicate with biologists, medicinal chemists and software engineers to provide application training and support, to translate screening, chemistry and data analysis requirements into software deliverables, and to troubleshoot, document and resolve software problems.

    Characteristic Duties:
    • Provide end user support and training to TDD scientists using vendor and internally-developed data capture and analysis applications. Create and deliver training and support materials.
    • Work with biologists, chemists, and software engineers to define and document informatics requirements for drug discovery informatics and data analysis systems. Create and execute project plans for deployment of new or updated systems, including integration to data storage, configuration of instrument software and design of system validation studies; identify opportunities for innovation; proactively identify risks and propose mitigation strategies.
    • Investigate issues with deployed systems and work with users and software engineers to determine the cause, provide immediate workarounds, and design long term solutions.
    • Work with Broad IT infrastructure and software vendor support groups as needed to resolve issues and to implement software package upgrades.
    • Serve as project lead or business analyst to assess unmet business needs for users, facilitate build versus buy decisions, participate in setting strategy, and lead or participate on cross-functional teams to implement selected solutions.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • M.S. in biology, chemistry or computer science with at least five years of work experience or B.S. with at least eight years of work experience.
    • At least two years of experience working in pharmaceutical drug discovery or development is required. Experience with small-molecule screening and hit progression is a plus.
    • At least three years of experience in a software development environment is required, including user requirements analysis and documentation, business process mapping, and project team participation. Project management experience with a demonstrated record of successful solution delivery is a significant advantage.
    • Experience with electronic lab notebooks, LIMS and data analysis applications is essential (e.g. CambridgeSoft, GeneData, Pipeline Pilot, Spotfire, Seurat). Experience with chemical databases and drawing applications or compound inventory management is a strong plus.
    • Basic knowledge of relational database structure and SQL is required. Understanding of programming principles and experience with PERL, Python, JavaScript, C/C++ or Java is helpful.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, with a strong focus on customer support. Experience with ITIL preferred.
    • Must possess strong organizational skills and an affinity for problem solving.
