Opportunity: Post-doctoral position in COMPUTATIONAL GENOMICS (#00564-R) @ CSHL -- Cold Spring Harbor, NY (US)
Submitted by Marjorie Ryan; posted on Tuesday, November 13, 2012

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory invites applications for a post-doctoral position in the laboratory of Jesse Gillis. The focus will be on using gene networks to explore the functional connection between neuropsychiatric disease candidates. Potential projects include developing gene networks tailored to conditions of interest (such as age or tissue), characterizing the effectiveness of machine learning methods in function prediction or disease candidate prioritization, developing new ways to operationalize "gene function", and other questions at the systems level of computational genomics.

The successful candidate will join a team at the Stanley Institute for Cognitive Genomics at CSHL working to identify the genetic causes of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. This interdisciplinary project offers opportunities to address fundamental questions in computational genomics with first access to very large and novel genomic data sets. The expected duration of the position is 3-5 years with renewal at the end of each year. A broad range of backgrounds are suitable for this position.

    REQUIREMENTS

A PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or computational neuroscience is strongly preferred. Exceptional applicants without a computational degree will also be considered. The ideal candidate would have experience with gene network analysis in some form, be familiar with standard bioinformatics tools and have proven ability in elements of either machine learning, signal processing, or detailed computational modeling. Knowledge in genetics or neuroscience is helpful but not necessary. Familiarity with either Matlab or R is a plus.

    ABOUT US

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a world-renowned research and educational institution with programs in cancer, neuroscience, plant biology, genomics and bioinformatics. The Laboratory is recognized internationally for its excellence in research and educational activities.
