    Opportunity: Statistical Genetics Programmer -- BIOINFORMATICIAN @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
    Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Monday, November 19, 2012

    We are currently seeking a highly talented individual with a strong computational/IT background who seeks to use their computational skills to analyse large-scale data with important disease and population genetic ramifications. One focus will be to analyse and manipulate large-scale (GWAS) genotype and related data from thousands of mothers and babies with PreEclampsia (PE) in order to identify DNA variants that predispose to PE in maternal and/or fetal DNA. This position will also involve enhancing software that evaluates and visualizes the genomic locations of admixed DNA in subjects with ancestry from two or more genetically distinct groups, in order to increase the software's capabilities and extend its use to whole genome sequence data. The position will provide opportunities for ingenuity when applying computational approaches to address a variety of genetic analysis tasks and hence will provide opportunities to learn scientific and theoretical aspects of disease and population genetics in conjunction with the computational tasks performed.

    Now is an extremely exciting time for the study of human genetic variation. As a world leader in human genomics, genome informatics, and whole genome DNA sequencing, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI) is now focusing large-scale genotyping, DNA sequencing, and mathematical analysis on important disease and population genetic questions.

    Essential Skills:
    • Extensive experience in quantitative science as evidenced for example by a degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Computer Science; Bioinformatics; Quantitative Genetics)
    • Demonstrated high level of software programming skill and knowledge
    • Firm grounding in mathematical/statistical/computational methods
    • Previous experience working with large-scale (empirical and/or simulated) datasets;
    • Strong interest in disease and the life sciences
    • Ability to communicate effectively with collaborators both internally and externally
    • Ability to maintain cordial, effective working relationships
    • Attention to detail and ability to work to tight timelines
    Ideal Skills:
    • Knowledge of Perl, C++, UNIX/LINUX, Oracle and/or MySQL
    • Demonstrable good project management and organisational skills
    • Demonstrated proficiency in manipulating and querying large relational databases
    • Experience in applying computational methods to the analysis of genetic data
    • Track record in preparing scientific presentations and contributing to scientific publications
    • Some knowledge of website construction

    This is a 3 year fixed contract position

    The location of this role is the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridge CB10 1SA
