Submitted by taehyun hwang; posted on Tuesday, November 20, 2012

A post-doctoral position for machine learning, image processing, or computational biology is available in the department of clinical science at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Cancer Center.

This position provides unique opportunities to study the heterogeneity of cell population related with disease progression and therapy resistance by analyzing next-generation sequencing data, and build predictive models for clinical outcome prediction and biomarker discovery by integrating `omics and image data.

Our current research focuses on developing computational approaches based on machine learning and data mining techniques to integrate `omics data (e.g., genomic, genetic, phenotypic, and clinical data), by incorporating knowledge derived from related experiments (e.g. protein-protein, co-expression, genetic interaction networks) and biological databases for translational research into human disease.

Successful candidates should have a PhD degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, bioinformatics/computational biology, and are highly innovative and motivated individuals with strong experiences in machine learning, statistical method and/or image processing. Candidate must have strong programming skills in C/C++/Java, Perl, Python, Matlab or R. Basic knowledge in biology is preferred but not required. Preferred candidates will have significant experience in developing machine learning, data mining, and statistical methods.

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, home of five Nobel laureates, is one of the leading medical education (top 10 in the United States combined Primary Care and Research U.S. News Rankings) and biomedical research institutions in the United States and the flagship medical school of the University of Texas System. The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is No. 6 in Medicine, and No. 48 overall in the world, according to the 2012 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
