    An article by Maureen McDonough:

    ``The British bioinformatician Ewan Birney was presented with the 2005 Benjamin Franklin Award from Bioinformatics.Org at the Bio-IT World Conference + Expo on May 19. Jeff Bizzaro, chairman of the Bioinformatics Organization, presented the award.

    ``The Franklin Award, named for the great scientist who refused to patent his inventions, annually recognizes an individual `who has promoted free and open access to the methods and materials used in the scientific field of bioinformatics.'''
