I, Librarian 2.0.10 released

I, Librarian 2.0.10 brings various small improvements, bug fixes, and integrated search of JSTOR. For the first time, a full-featured version for Mac OS X is also available for download. Upgrading from all previous versions is recommended.

Several bugs have been fixed, including the inability to batch upload PDF files containing white spaces in filenames on Linux platforms. Other improvements include permanent log in, direct display of a PDF during manual recording plus during the transfer from Pubmed Central and arXiv databases, reduced time of the full text search, and more.

You can now use I, Librarian on Mac OS X as well. You only need to activate Apache, and install new PHP. Please check the corresponding installation notes for your version of OS X. The previous Windows installers were not working properly on 64-bit platforms. The new installers should work, please let me know if you continue to have problems on 64-bit Vista and Win 7.

I wish to thank you for you interest in I, Librarian. Version 2.0.9 has been downloaded over 2,200 times. I hope many of you keep using I, Librarian and will upgrade to the new version. The process is very simple, you only need to overwrite your existing files with the new upgrade package. Finally, in order to benefit from the faster full-text search, you need to upgrade your database by a new tool "Upgrade PDF Index".

As always, let me know if you encounter any bugs, annoyances, or if you develop new ideas for I, Librarian improvement.

  1. Hi, Martin, nice work -- thank you! Two issues, however: 1) I cannot see how to edit (that is, add or modify) the categories assigned to an item. (Important in case of batch import.) Maybe you could make "Category " a table, and create a table LIB_CAT to express the relation. 2) Full text search does not work :-( I can see the text I'm querying in the FULL_TEXT table, but the query always returns "no hits". I suppose that the filtering you do in "search.php" filters too much. Best regards, Thomas

  2. 1. You can edit categories in a web form, which will open in a new window, when you click on a record title in the split window (top-metadata,bottom-pdf). This is a little clumsy and it will change in the next version of I, Librarian. 2. Full text search. You have to type your search term into "Search PDF files" text input in Advanced search page. Plese use the web forum to follow up on this.

  3. Thanks a lot for the software, it is exactly that I looked for! A small question: is there a possibility to contribute into a project?

  4. Yes. There is no contributors yet, but we can discuss what you have in mind. If you open the code, you will immediately see that I am not a coder. I prefer procedural programming, and I rarely comment my code. :-( There are other ways to contribute, including testing, spreading the word, and so on.
