A few new features in I, Librarian 2.1

The development of I, Librarian progressed quite a lot during this summer. The following screenshot shows a new feature that I named Omnitool.

Omnitool should partially compensate for the lack of the drag and drop in I, Librarian. It should enable to apply certain operations to a list of files, which can be anything that appears in the right window panel (including search results). For instance, users will be able to add categories to search results, or save the search result in Clipboard and so on.

The database structure has been changed to allow for better scalability. A few new fields, like affiliation and issues, have been added. The interface has been spruced up with the help of jQuery. Among other improvements are searchable notes and desktop projects, the ability to assign categories to items during import from metadata files or during the batch import. Users will be able to batch import their PDFs from a directory of their choice, plus I, Librarian will crawl subdirectories, because many users have PDFs stored in elaborate directory trees.

I still have a list of about ten improvements that I want to work on, like a watch list of added items, improved export (as a zip archive), and simplifying the import from PubMed and other databases. But I would really like to release I, Librarian 2.1 this fall, so I am not sure that I will implement them all. Stay tuned.

  1. Great work, We are really appreciating I, Librarian. It is a very convenient tool. One feature I would see as valuable for future would be for I Libraian to be able to upload direct froma web link instead of having to save a local copy of a file before uploading it to the Librarian. Regards

  2. Thanks, Brian. I just implemented this last week. The initial tests look good! Users will be able to paste a direct link to PDF into the upload form. I, Librarian will transfer the PDF, exract DOI, and pull the metadata from the Web. It speeds the recording process quite a bit!
