Submitted by J.W. Bizzaro; posted on Friday, January 04, 2002

The systems may be down for a couple hours today (January 4) for some software upgrades, starting around 22:00 GMT. Please do not use the systems for any important work at that time.

FTP temporarily down due to system upgrade

FTP will be unavailable for an hour or so after receipt of this notice. We are expanding the hard drive capacity of the projects server (currently dubbed "depot") by about 62 GB. The new space will eventually be used for project shell, Web and CVS space, in addition to FTP and backups.

File release function being worked on -- temporarily off line
Submitted by J.W. Bizzaro; posted on Saturday, October 13, 2001

    Submitter

For project administrators, the file release function is being worked on this weekend. Some improvements are planned, such as placing the files on FTP rather than on the Web. Please do not use this feature until further notice. If you need to make a file available, please use your FTP directory.

    Connection Problems NOT QUITE Fixed
Submitted by J.W. Bizzaro; posted on Thursday, October 04, 2001

Wednesday night we experienced the same difficulty connecting to the server. Upon inspection, it appeared that our little gremlin friend was back to using our IP address, despite InfoTech's assurance that he had been blocked.

In the morning we disconnected the server to let IT hunt for the computer again, but they didn't get any response from it.

It's probably someone using a PC somewhere on the network, turning it on and off only as it is needed. We'll wait to see if he appears again, while IT is open, and then continue the hunt. If the problem remains unresolved for a while, we'll switch IP addresses.

We thank you for bearing with us during this difficult time.

    Connection Problems Fixed

We noticed some access problems over the weekend, particularly disconnects and access denials. Some administrators worked from late Saturday night until Sunday afternoon trying to hunt down the problem, which seemed to evade us. The problem did not appear to be internal, as no programs were being executed during outage times, and there were no signs of a break-in.

It turned out that someone else on the local network decided to take our static IP address, and this caused some confusion on the network.

The primary server was taken offline this morning while UMass InfoTech located and disconnected the computer using our address. Our server is now back on and functioning normally, so it is safe to continue activities.

    Full SSH Compatibility Achieved

The server (where shell accounts are) now works with both SSH1 and SSH2 for shell, SCP, SFTP, and CVS.

    Have fun.

SSH Available, but Only with SSH2 Protocol
Submitted by J.W. Bizzaro; posted on Sunday, March 11, 2001

    Submitter

SSH is available once again, but some people have not been able to connect with the SSH1 protocol. The server will only accept SSH2 connections (for now), so if you're running a client that uses both protocols but SSH1 by default, be sure to type the following:

    ssh -2 username[at]bioinformatics.org

If you're running a client that is compatible only with SSH1, you can upgrade to OpenSSH 2.5.1, the latest version:

    SSH Unavailable During Upgrade

Our wizard administrator, Gary, is busily upgrading our installation of OpenSSH. For the time-being this service is unavailable. The old-fashioned and insecure method of login is available (eek!), but please don't use it unless it is very important. We will send another notice when SSH is once again in service.

The Web server went down for part of a day due to a blizzard-caused power outage. Everything is back up and running now.
