I had problems with spammers on some of the other lists that I've managed. 
When filtering failed, I tried restricting posts to members only, and I also
tried holding posts for approval.  Neither approach was greeted very well by
subscribers, who commented that they'd rather put up with a few SPAMs than
restricted or delayed posts.
