1. SCIENCE NEWS
===========================================================================

-Different Parts of Brain Handle Fantasy & Reality
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect03_27.jhtml?link=1

The ability to recognize objects in the real world is handled by different
parts of the brain than those that allow us to imagine what the world is
like. That is the result of a brain mapping experiment published in the
March 28 issue of the journal Neuron.

-Animals Use Scent to Determine Identity
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect03_27.jhtml?link=2

The tiny Belding's ground squirrels appear to be "kissing". Instead, they
are sniffing to analyze secretions from facial scent glands, hoping to learn
from the complex odor bouquet who is family and who's not. More remarkably,
they are determining in a matter of seconds precisely who is close-enough
kin to risk their lives helping -- and perhaps even whether they are too
closely related to for mating.

-Mammalian Protein Resembles Snake Venom Toxin
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect03_27.jhtml?link=3

Scientists have found that a protein resembling snake venom neurotoxin
modulates the sensitivity of specific receptors in the brain that are
targets of nicotine, the primary addictive drug in tobacco. The researchers
say that the protein, lynx1, may be a new tool with which to probe how
nicotine and other drugs activate “pleasure centers” of the brain.

-Forging a Link Between Brain and Bone
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect03_27.jhtml?link=4

The adipose-derived hormone leptin is well known for its influence on
feeding behavior. Animals with genetic defects in leptin signaling become
obese when supplied unlimited food. However, even when food supply is
limited to prevent obesity, leptin still exerts profound effects on
various organs, including the bones.

-Mouse Protein Enhances Fruit Fly Memory
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect03_27.jhtml?link=5

Researchers have found that they can enhance memory in fruit flies by
boosting the level of a protein called PKM. The scientists could trigger
memory enhancement in the flies by using either a fly or a mouse version
of PKM. The study, published in the April issue of Nature Neuroscience,
provides an important new clue about a fundamental mechanism of memory
common to flies, humans, and most other animals.

-Building a Better Mouse Cage
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect03_27.jhtml?link=6

Mice have done a lot for biomedical research. Dr. Germain F. Rivard decided
to do something for them. "I disliked Static and Ventilated micro isolator
caging systems for the poor air quality and the bad air ventilation they
provided to the mice. I decided to invent a completely new system that
resolved all those problems cost-effectively."
