Biochemistry is necessary to bioinformatics in many respects. Most
obviously it is necessary to understanding the systems one is studying.

Biochemistry is necessary to understand the mechanisms of systems biology,
everything from the mechanisms of signal transduction to enzymatic
catalysis.

Biochemistry is also necessary to understand how biologists generated the
data that bioinformatics studies. It's no good analysing data unless you
know how it was produced and under what conditions -- how accurate it
might be and what kinds of tests were made. Otherwise you have no
idea as to the relevance of your data analysis to the real system you
study.
