http://gridengine.sunsource.net/project/gridengine/howto/nfsreduce.html Gridware does by default use nfs for some things, the majority of communication is done using RPC I believe. If you want to have redundant failover gridware masters then a nfs is required between the two masters, local spool directories is recommended in my opinion.
