Steve asked about how small companies build IT groups. Well we are a small biotech company (~100 people) and we have the "Informatics Group" which is made up of a database group, a bioinformatics group and the IT group. We do find that once things become stable they get passed to IT to maintain in the general sense, with specialized questions forwarded to the bioinformatics or db people as required. This system seems to have worked for us though I suppose it helps that the 3 groups within informatics work close together.
