Hi Keith, There are several language-centric open source bio projects, loosely organized under the Open Bioinformatics Foundation. The OBF's website is a little sparse, but you can start here with the list of projects: http://www.open-bio.org/wiki/Projects Each of those projects have mailing lists. You probably already know this, but a good way to get a feel for what's going on in the community is to monitor its list. BioPerl has a page on how to join in as well as a list of TODOs: http://www.bioperl.org/wiki/Becoming_a_developer http://www.bioperl.org/wiki/Project_priority_list I'm most familiar with BioPerl, but I'd expect the other projects would have similar pages. And if not, you can "raise your hand" on the mailing list and volunteer. All of them would be grateful for your contribution. Also, depending on what aspects of biology interest you, there are more focused biology-related open-source projects. AMOS (A Modular Open-Source Assembler) is one example: http://amos.sourceforge.net/ Anyone else, please chime in with others. Oh, and while this isn't strictly bio, the Perl Foundation was involved in the Summer of Code this year. I bet they'd be supportive of a bio project for next year if anyone wants to propose one. http://www.perl.org/advocacy/summerofcode/ Hope that helps, Dave -- Dave Messina Informatics Analyst WashU Genome Sequencing Center dmessina a t wustl.edu 314-286-1415
