Protein structure prediction is a good field but it is *very* competitive. At present the ab initio prediction field is making the most progress. A good grasp of physics/physical chemistry is necessary. I agree with Martin that getting into areas which are less well-populated is preferable, and collaboration with a good experimental group is an excellent way to go. However it can be difficult to find people with realistic expectations. Protein function prediction is another growth area, although again it is now attracting a lot of attention. However I've observed a lack of useful approaches for predicting function from 3D structure, that's definitely a good area.
