        * a dot is the default locus representation (when there is no symbol
          or icon for locus)
        * text can appear on locus dot - space (' ') is default text
        * connector dots have space as default text too
        * NOTE: dot/line combination should be called 'connector'
        * selection boxes are now used instead of changing text_box color
