Dear Proteopedia Users:
It appears to me that there is a problem in the current version of
Java for Mac Snow Leopard that precludes authoring scenes in
Proteopedia. The problem is not present in Windows 7, where a newer
version of Java is available.
I am interested to hear from users of other Apple OS versions (10.5
Leopard, 10.7 Lion, or Mountain Lion). Please report also your
version of Java (open Jmol menu by clicking on "Jmol", Main Menu,
About, System). Also interested in reports from users of other
versions of Windows.
If, like me, your usual workstation uses Snow Leopard, you may need
to work on a different workstation, such as a Windows system, in
order to author scenes in Proteopedia (at least for now -- hopefully
this problem will be fixed soon by a new release of Java).
DETAILS ABOUT THE PROBLEM
Today I tried authoring scenes in Proteopedia for the first time in a
couple of months.
Using Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.8) with the current version of Java
(1.6.0_45) I cannot load PDB files or saved scenes into Proteopedia's
Scene Authoring Tool (SAT). I get a tiny red message in Jmol. Opening
the Java Console, I can see the message. It is a Java security access
exception. This has been reproducible on two different Macs (same OS
same Java version) with two different logins to Proteopedia, and in
Safari, Chrome and Firefox. On rare occasions, the PDB file does load
-- so the problem is not 100% of the time, but it is over 90% of the
time in my testing.
However I can load PDB files and saved scenes into the SAT using
Windows 7, Java 1.7.0_21, in both Internet Explorer and Chrome.
Sincerely, Eric
