Introduction

The Bioinformatics Organization offers professional development courses for continuing scientific education. These are short, postgraduate-level courses on computational topics of interest to prospective and practicing researchers in the life sciences. Course titles and descriptions are below. We offer online and on-site courses, most of which can be customized for the needs of companies or organizations. Please contact us for further details.

For online courses, the Bioinformatics Organization uses a system for streaming the multimedia of live lectures. It incorporates the following features:

Computer science topics

Our courses in computer science use laboratory scenarios and data to introduce biologists to fundamental computing topics.

The CS101 courses are for biologists who are unfamiliar with some or all of the computer languages and tools used in the bioinformatics discipline, and our CS102 and CS103 courses build upon the concepts introduced. CS102 and CS103 courses are project-based and use take-home assignments to acquaint the biologist with larger and more complex computing problems.

Computer Language Series
Data Visualization Series
Machine Learning Series

Biology topics

Our courses in biology cover special topics in that field but introduce techniques for computational analysis that can be utilized by practitioners in any of the allied fields (CS, math, chemistry, engineering and physics).

Sequence Analysis Series
Microarray Data Analysis Series
Network & Pathway Analysis Series
Genomics Series

Math topics

Our courses in math use laboratory scenarios and data to introduce biologists to essential topics in mathematics.

The MA101 courses are for biologists who are unfamiliar with some or all of the mathematical methods used in the bioinformatics discipline.

Biostatistics Series

On-demand option

"On-demand" courses come with pre-recorded lectures, and you may contact the instructor via email at your convenience. The certificate is also provided with this option, and there are substantial discounts compared with the tuition of live courses (please see the course descriptions for tuition information).

The on-demand courses contain all of the materials and lectures from the live courses, on DVD or via download. Some of the videos are even recorded during live lectures. The other materials included are PowerPoint slides, sample scripts, and sample data, which are referenced in the lectures.

Current on-demand courses
On-demand bundle

The course bundle is an on-demand option available for prospective students that are interested in getting unlimited access to the above courses (taught by Shailender Nagpal, Bioinformatics.Org's primary trainer). Price: $2,500 per Academic user and $3,800 per Commercial/Government user, for perpetual access to course materials such as slides, examples and videos. Any new courses created by this trainer in the first year will automatically become available to subscribers at no extra charge. A renewal fee of 20% applies for adding such courses in subsequent years.

Trainer-Led Program in Bioinformatics

The Bioinformatics Organization offers a Trainer-Led Program in Bioinformatics that is geared towards biologists who currently do not have computer programming experience, but are looking to develop serious bioinformatics skills to increase their productivity. The curriculum includes:

Price: $4,200 per attendee.

Duration: 10 weeks. Up to 3-4 hours of live instruction and interaction with trainer per week

Other logistics: Homework, quizzes and projects will be assigned and graded

This program is certified by the Bioinformatics Organization, Inc., the largest international affiliation in the field, and it will count as 34 "Continuing Scientific Education" (CSE) units (one unit per contact hour) within the Organization. Students completing the program will receive a certificate of completion.
